New years celebration and trumpet tradition, is it Islamic?
The day of the BC new year is ahead. It seems that all around the world
gets too excited about it so do many muslims. We all know that trumpet
has been something common in BC new year tradition. But there's one big
question "Is it an islamic tradition?", shall we find out more where's
the root of this habit came from?
New year trumpet tradition we
know is very popular in the west that it spreads widely and becomes
world's tradition so that everybody's enjoy to howl it including muslims
nowadays. We can see many people sell and buy it everywhere. But the
root of howling a trumpet actually came from Jewish tradition of Rosh
Hashanah. What is Rosh Hashanah
"Rosh Hashanah" (Hebrew:
literally "head of the year"), is the Jewish New Year. It is the first
of their High Holy Days. Rosh Hashanah is a two day celebration which
begins on the first day of Tishrei, the first month of the Jewish
calendar. Rosh Hashanah customs include sounding the shofar (a kind of
traditional trumpet which sounds similar to modern trumpet today) and
eating symbolic foods such as apples dipped in honey. The common
greeting on Rosh Hashanah is "Shanah Tovah", which, in Hebrew, means
"(Have) a good year". So, sounding trumpet in Jewish tradition basically
related to and has importance in their religious ritual.
Now
after knowing this truth, as a true muslim is it appropriate for us to
follow this tradition? The habit which is never been taught in Islam.
Don't just because everyone is doing it without the proper knowledge
then we also follow in this apostasy for it's something popular or
trendy among the community. Not only sounding the trumpet in new year
but also celebrating the BC new year or any other religions rituals or
traditions are forbidden for us since those are the disbelievers habits.
Allah said in the Qur'an:
"O you who have believed, if you obey those who disbelieve, they will
turn you back on your heels, and you will [then] become losers.
(QS:3:149)
Allah also reminds us in His ayah that we shall not
follow traditions which has no clear basis since mostly they're done by
our parents or our ancestors while they have no Islamic roots at all. We
need to be aware of it since truly it's the way of shatan to misguide
mankind and considered as sin.
And when it is said to them,
"Follow what Allah has revealed," they say, "Rather, we will follow that
which we found our fathers doing." Even though their fathers understood
nothing, nor were they guided? (QS:3:170)
It is prohibited for
a Muslim to imitates, to greet, to accept invitations on such
occasions, because it as implies taking part in their celebrations.
Therefore, whoever does anything of this sort is a sinner, even if he
does it out of politeness, friendliness, shyness, or for whatever other
reason, because this is hypocrisy in Islam and it makes the Kuffaar feel
proud of their ways and festivals.
Rasulullah Sal'Allahu Alaihi Wa Salam stated in the hadith:
Narrated by ibn Umar (ra) “Whoever imitates a group, then he is from amongst them”. (Abu Daw'ud)
Abu Said Al-Khudri reported that the Messenger of Allah (saws) said:
"You will surely follow in the ways of those before you, span by span
and cubit by cubit, so much so that if they were to enter an iguana's
hole, you would follow after them." We said, "O Messenger of Allah, do
you mean the Jews and the Christians?" He replied, "Then, who else?"
In another hadith of Imam Tirmidhi's Sunan it is reported on the
authority of Abdullah Ibn Amr that the Prophet of Allah (saws) further
said, "If there was a person among them who went unto his mother
publicly, there will also appear some in my Ummah who will do the same."
Ibn Taymiyyah, in his beautiful and monumental book Iqtidaa’ as-Siraat
al-Mustaqeem Mukhaalafatu Ashaab’il-Jaheem (In Pursuit of the Straight
Path by Contradicting the People of the Hellfire), said: “Imitating them
in some of their festivals implies that one is pleased with their false
beliefs and practices, and gives them the hope that they may have the
opportunity to mislead the weak.”
Allah said: O you who have
believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as
Muslims [in submission to HimAnd hold firmly to the rope of Allah all
together and do not become divided. (QS:3:102)
We can tell that
a celebration or a holidays is an act of ibadah (worship) in Islam by
following and understanding the sayings of prophet Muhammad SalAllahu
Alaihi Wa Salam: Imams An Nesa’i and Ibn Hebban reported an authentic
hadith narrated by Anas that at the time when the prophet (S.A.W.) came
to Madina and saw people have two days in which they celebrate. He said
(the prophet) "Allah (S.W.T.) did replace these two holidays with better
ones. The day of fiter (after the month of Ramadan) and the day of
sacrifice (in the pilgrimage season).
May Allah Azza wa jalla
always give us guidance to follow the true Islamic values and may He
Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala protects us from such kuffar practices and the
misguidance of shatan and include us into those who revive His Qur'an
and sunnah Rasulullah SalAllahu Alaihi Wa Salam correctly.
“ Robbi inni audzubika an as alaka maa laisalli bihi ilmun wa illam tagfirli watarhamni akum minal khosirin “
"My Lord, I seek refuge in You from asking that of which I have no
knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy upon me, I will be
among the losers." (QS:11:47)
“ Robbana latuzig qullubana ba’daidz haddaitana wahabblana miladunka, rohmatan innaka antal wahab” (QS:3:8 )
"Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.
Rabbana Aatina fiddunya hasanah wa fil akhirati hasanah wa qina adhabannaar
"Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter,
and defend us from the torment of the Fire!" (Qur'an 2:201)
